Commercial Driven, Inspired by Conservation

Commercially Driven, Inspired by Conservation

Hookpod Ltd. is a private company which has been established by a small group of shareholders with the aim of eliminating seabird bycatch in pelagic longline fisheries.

Whilst we are a commercial operation, our philosophy is driven by conservation objectives. A proportion of all profits will be passed back into seabird conservation projects, and as take up and production are scaled up, this will be reflected in value for money for fishers and end users.

Individual Sponsorship

Financial support from individuals has been pivotal in getting Hookpod approved and adopted in countries such as New Zealand but there is so much more we can do in fisheries from South America to Africa and wherever albatrosses are in danger.

£5 provides one Hookpod to the longline fishing industry and helps protect against seabird bycatch for 3 years. By sponsoring a hook, you can help us provide a Hookpod direct to the longline fishing industry to protect against seabird bycatch. These sponsored Hookpods are given to fishermen to trial without financial loss and therefore help to encourage the widespread uptake of best practice.

Our Story

Hookpod Ltd was created in 2013, but our story started many years earlier. In 2005, British brothers and inventors Ben & Pete Kibel started working to solve one of fishing’s biggest environmental challenges – seabird bycatch in longline fisheries. Working closely with bycatch expert Dr Ben Sullivan, BirdLife International and the wider fishing industry around the world, the team spent several years perfecting what fishermen need: a solution that fits seamlessly into the fishing operation, allowing them to catch fish but not birds.

By 2013, the design was finalised and trials were showing good results. Private investment was then raised from our first handful of shareholders to create the company and begin the task of development and marketing. Over the last decade we have raised funds to continue this work via crowdfunding projects in 2014 and 2018, widespread support from the conservation world and bringing new shareholders on board; all dedicated to achieving a world without albatross bycatch on pelagic longlines.
